Fun Facts on Toa Payoh Estate History
Toa Payoh, named after its swampy origins ("big swamp" in Hokkien), is one of Singapore's oldest housing estates. Once a rural area with farms and kampongs, it became the country's first satellite town in 1964 under HDB, featuring modern amenities and pioneering public housing designs.
Significant events include Queen Elizabeth II's visit in 1972 and hosting the 1973 SEAP Games. The estate is home to the historic Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery, built in 1898.
Rejuvenated in the 1990s and 2000s, Toa Payoh blends heritage with modernity, remaining a vibrant, centrally located hub symbolizing Singapore's urban progress.
